Born and raised in Mystic, Connecticut, 19-year-old Jusinia Hylton is an aspiring horror author. She is currently working on her first book, which she plans to be a horror sci-fi young adult standalone novel. She still lives in Mystic with her parents, her three dogs, and her leopard gecko. Her favorite activity is reading, and she owns over 1,500 books. She wasn't always a book lover. Once, she used to hate reading because school forced her to do it. Then, one day during COVID, her mom made her walk into a Barnes & Noble. From that moment on, everything changed.

 

She immediately fell in love with the crisp scent of the pages, the way the sight of each beautiful book cover calmed her. She did not stay in that store long, but on the drive home, she couldn't stop thinking about it. She arrived home, and a couple of hours later she was bored. So she decided to pick up a book. Her mind tumbled into the exotic world of a young adult fantasy horror series. She has not stopped reading since. Reading has gotten her through COVID, mental issues, physical issues, and the hard truths of life. Because of all the young adult sci-fi/fantasy series she was reading in the beginning of her book journey, she had so many unique ideas swirling in her mind.

 

It was not until she attended a virtual author talk of her favorite author at the time that she considered actually writing these ideas. Only the night before this talk, she had a dream she remembered vividly. She could not stop thinking about it; it was an idea she had never seen done, and it fascinated her. She was frustrated that there was nothing like it in the world. After the author talk the next night, she realized something. "Why don't I bring this idea into the world? Why don't I write my own novel?" She remembers thinking.

 

Ironically, only a couple of weeks before, she wrote her very first short story for school and loved doing it. Even better, it was horror. It felt like destiny. She was 16 when this happened. She knew from that day on she wanted to be an author no matter how long it took. She wanted to write horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. She wanted to horrify readers.

 

Disgust them. Make them cry and smile. Make them want to throw her book across the room out of pure passion. She writes down every single idea she gets, even if she doesn't think she will use it. She has joined writing groups and a book club that both inspire and encourage her to follow her dreams. Her family are her biggest cheerleaders and the reason she believes that one day, she will make it. She will achieve her dreams even if it is years and years from now.
